More than fabric. That was always the idea.
Twenty-five years ago, I started Auckzy with one simple thought: clothing should do more than cover you. It should feel like it belongs to you.
I'm Emma, and Auckzy began with me, and if I'm honest, with a little of my own frustration. After my pregnancy, I stopped feeling comfortable in my own wardrobe. I felt self-conscious about my stomach and quietly gave up on dresses altogether. Trousers never seemed to sit the way I wanted. And so much of what I owned felt heavy, which is the last thing you want when you're living through a New Zealand summer. I kept asking myself the same question: why does it have to be this way? Why can't clothing be light, easy, and flattering, without making me choose between them?
That question became Auckzy.
I've always believed that what we wear is part of who we are. A good piece of clothing carries something of your character in it: a certain ease, a bit of confidence, a glow that's yours and nobody else's. But too often, the things that are supposed to make us feel good end up holding us back instead. The heat talks you out of finishing the look you love. An insecurity talks you out of the dress. I didn't want the women who shop with us to keep living with those small nos. I wanted clothing that says yes.
What makes an Auckzy piece different
This is where "more than fabric" stops being a nice line and becomes real, because it lives in the details you don't always notice at first glance.
Most of our pieces are made with built-in Tummy Control, designed to gently smooth and support so you can move through your day without giving it a second thought. Many are made with UV protection in mind, because our customers live outdoors, at the beach, in the garden, out on the coast, and their clothing should look after them while they do. And almost everything we make is deliberately lightweight. We lean on breathable polyester, which keeps you far fresher than heavier fabrics like wool, and we blend polyester with cotton where we want a piece to be soft and hard-wearing.
None of this is by accident. Every one of those choices is there to solve a real problem a real woman was having. Usually one I'd had myself.
A family that grew
What began as one woman and one idea has, over 25 years, become something much bigger: a family business, in every sense of the word.
These days my daughter Zydelle has taken on much of the running of Auckzy, and I couldn't be prouder of what she's built. She kept the heart of it: the same care for the customer, the same belief in what we make. And she carried us into a new chapter. Under her, Auckzy became the online store we are today: faster for our customers, easier to reach, and available right across New Zealand, from coast to coast. Our catalogue has grown. Our range of sizes has grown. And our whole reason for existing has stayed exactly the same.
I'm still very much here, too. This has become a true family effort, and I wouldn't have it any other way. We started small a quarter of a century ago, and seeing how many women we get to dress today, comfortably and confidently, in something they actually reach for in the morning, is the proudest thing in my life.
